I Cheated on My Kindle

I love my Kindle and I use it often. However, I’ve been cheating on it with some print books lately, namely books that I use for research. For example, the latest paper book I bought was Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensics Techniques. It is over 1000 pages long and it has tons of great information that is readily usable by someone who writes the types of things that I do.

Because I’m using the book for research – even though I’m reading it cover to cover right now – I know that there is going to be a lot of flipping back and forth, adding sticky notes as reminders and whatnot. I know that bookmarks are possible with e-readers, but paging through a book that I’m using for research just seems much more natural to me. I imagine that this will change in the future as these e-readers evolve. How do you feel about e-readers for research books? Are there functions or features that I’ve missed?

By the way, if you write anything dealing with death, police procedure, forensics, murderers and the like, you should really check out Practical Homicide Investigation. It isn’t cheap, but it will become an indispensible research partner, I’m sure. Sometime in the next few days, I will write a post that looks at some of the topics the book covers.

Blood, Magic & a Concubine: 3 Dark Urban Fantasy Tales

UPDATE: Now available on Amazon.

I just released a short digital collection of dark urban fantasy called Blood, Magic a & Concubine. The collection  is approximately 20,000 words in length and is a mere .99 cents. It will be available on Amazon for the Kindle, Barnes & Noble for the Nook, and other online retailers soon. Currently, you can find the ebook on Smashwords, which also offers a free preview. I will update the post as soon as it is live in other areas. Here’s a little bit about the 3 stories.

“Blood, Magic & a Concubine”: Johnny Stone is a wizard who fixes things and makes problems go away in the sprawling subterranean city of Underbelly. When someone kidnaps Manny the Goon’s girl, he enlists Johnny to find and rescue her. But Manny is holding back information, which doesn’t make Johnny’s job easy, not even when he enlists the help of a Nordic god.

“The Naughty List”: Seven-year-old Janie’s life isn’t so great. Lyle keeps coming back and being mean to her and her mom, and now Mom spends all of her time sleeping in her room. Thankfully, it’s Christmas, and in her letter to Santa, Janie asked for help with Lyle. When Santa and his elves get the letter, they are eager to help. Things might not go so well for Lyle.

“Under the Skin”: Kagan wakes up in a pool of blood. It isn’t the first time he’s woken up and found shredded human remains, and he fears it won’t be the last. He’s already killed someone he loves, even though he doesn’t remember doing it. There is something inside of him. He can feel it. Heeding the advice of a Navajo shaman, as well as the constant urging of the things living within him, he and his sister set out for the New Mexico desert to see if he can find answers.

Blood, Magic & a Concubine also includes an Excerpt from Breaking Glass, an upcoming novella featuring Thomas Rhymes.

My Current Writing Soundtrack

Whilst wasting away a Saturday contemplating some of my freelance work as well as fiction I’m writing, I thought I would take a few minutes to post up the ‘soundtrack’ for Dawn of the Pale Riders*.

I listen to this playlist whenever I’m working on the book, but there is always room for more songs. If you know of any tunes that might fit nicely along with these, feel free to send me some suggestions – my ears and my iPod are hungry for more.

I’ve even added links just in case you want to hear some of the songs below. I’m awesome like that.

Dawn of the Pale Riders Writing Soundtrack:

Pale Rider – The Creepniks

Ain’t No Grave – Johnny Cash

Deadman’s Gun – Ashtar Command

Gimme Shelter – Rolling Stones

*Dawn of the Pale Riders is a novel that takes place right after the events in the titular novella in Meat City and many years before the events of “Ballad of the Pale Riders”, a short story that in the same collection.

I’m 35. Where the Hell are the Space Aliens?

Well, I turned 35 today. Some people (my children, primarily) think I’m ancient, while others are telling me 35 is just a number. Those people are 36 and over, naturally.

Of course, with most birthdays come those wistful thoughts and unproductive imaginings of what might have happened had I done something differently. I have those. We all do at some point. Yet, I wouldn’t really change a thing. All the things you do help to make you who you are, or so they say. I’m unclear as to who they are. Despite my innumerable flaws, I’m okay with who I am. Perhaps they were right.

Thus far, being 35 is not what I imagined it would be. Of course, I’ve only been 35 for a few hours.

When I was a youngster, I was certain that by this age I would be repelling an extraterrestrial invasion. I even trained for it. I must’ve done at least 30 pushups and sit-ups, and I must’ve run through the fields and woods by my grandmother’s house half a dozen times. Maybe even seven times – that’s right, I was a hardcore eight-year-old. All in preparation for the arrival of angry, hungry space aliens. I even practiced daily with my BB gun until I could take out the little green army men from a dozen paces. Still, the extraterrestrials looking to dine on earthling meat haven’t arrived. Yet.

I guess there’s always tomorrow. Me and my BB gun are waiting.

iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch Apps for Writers

I love technology even though half the time I don’t know how to use it properly. Mostly I just push buttons so I can make pretty colors and neat sounds. Fortunately, I can use simple devices such as light switches and microwave ovens . . . although, some of the settings on the fancy microwaves still give me fits.

The latest technological wonder I’ve added to my robo-menagerie is the iPod Touch. It’s simple to use, and best of all it has those aforementioned lights and sounds I love so much. I’ve already wasted time on games and YouTube, so I thought I would check out some of the apps for writers. I found quite a few. I’m focusing on just the two that I thought I would use the most. These apps will also work for iPhone and iPad users.

My Writing Nook – The simple writing app has a word count feature, autosave, and a dictionary and thesaurus. You can write in portrait or landscape mode, and you can email documents to yourself. You might also want to use their free web app of the same name, which can sync with your iPod Touch. You can have your work in two places, and it will automatically update when you synchronize them with the touch of a button. The app costs $2.99

Screenplay – Black Mana Studios (an official technology partner of Final Draft) offers this screenwriting app. It works with Final Draft, naturally, but it can also import and export from Celtx, which is a free screenwriting program that many people are using. The app drag and drop scenes to rearrange them, write in landscape or portrait mode, and it features auto-complete for the character names so you don’t have to keep typing them throughout the script. The app costs $4.99.

Since I’d never tried typing on the small screen of an iPod Touch before, I wasn’t sure how the apps were going to handle my clumsy fingers. I was surprised at how well it worked – very few typos . . . no more than I usually make.

I’ve only used these apps for a few weeks, so I may update this post with further thoughts if I find things that I love or hate about them. So far, I like them. While I probably won’t write an entire novel or screenplay on my iPod, it’s nice to know that I could if I wanted to!

What does this mean for me? It probably means I will find more ways to spend time writing when I should be doing important things like watching Warehouse 13 or old Lost episodes, or contemplating what to do when the zombies attack.

What about you? What cool apps have you found that you love?

Check out My Interview on Francy & Friends!

Last Sunday, I was on Francy & Friends and the show was a whole lot of fun. We talked about Meat City, writing, Nazi fish from my story “Night Feeders”, Twilight (fans of Twilight may want to avoid this), horror, snakes, drinking from my skull, and many other things. Please give it a listen!

2 Flash Pieces in New Anthology: A Pint of Bloody Fiction

I have two short pieces in the anthology A Pint of Bloody Fiction from House of Horror, which you should be able to order from the link at the end of the post.

When I say short, I mean short. Each of my stories, “Worst Thing I Ever Did” and “Rorschach’s Vampire”, is just 200 words long. In fact, all of the stories in the anthology conform to the brutal (and fun) short word count.

Live on Francy & Friends 8PM Pacific Tommorrow Night (Aug 22)

I will be live on the Francy & Friends radio show tomorrow night at 8PM Pacific Time! We’ll be talking about Meat City, horror, and who knows what else. I hope you have a chance to come and listen – you can even call into the show. It should be a fun! Who knows what weird crap I might say?

If you can’t listen live, you can always listen to the recording later.

Five Great Things about the Zombie Apocalypse

The dead return to life, infect people, spread their nasty disease. You run for your life . . . or walk quickly depending on whether they are Romero’s shambling undead or the new, upgraded sprinting model. Sounds horrible, doesn’t it? Well, you’re just not looking at the bright side. Let’s see what good things can come from the inevitable zombie uprising.

Number 1 – You no longer need to worry about paying your credit card bills or your mortgage on time. I have it on good authority that zombies will go after creditors first, followed immediately by a buffet of all those people who are ‘holding you down’ followed with a dessert of your boss, who is probably one of those people holding you down.

Number 2 – The cost of housing will plummet. When there aren’t any more of those pesky people filling up all those fancy houses, you can have your pick of living quarters. Don’t worry about working hard; good things come to those who loot.

Number 3 – Reinvent yourself! Sure, you work in a cube now, but the other survivors don’t need to know about your former life. Be careful not to claim that you were a sharpshooter on SWAT, the explosives guy on ANY Michael Bay film, or anything like that – people will expect you to live up to your invented reputation when the hordes of undead start breaking down your shelter. See, you don’t have to try to live an interesting life now. Just wait for the zombies and then create one.

Number 4 – Tired of updating your status on Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace (are people still there), and every other social networking site known to humankind? Well, running from zombies is a good excuse to skip a few posts.

Number 5 – No more sparkling vampires. Nothing more really needs to be said about that.

I’m sure others have listed all the great things about the coming zombie apocalypse. This is my take. What have I missed?
